20 sierpnia obserwowałem asteroidę 1997 QK1 z grupy Apollo o średnicy 240-530 metrów. Po raz pierwszy została zaobserwowana przez obserwatorium w Mauna Kea 27 sierpnia 1997 roku. 4 dni temu, dokładnie w dzień mojej obserwacji, przeszła w bliskiej odległości (ok. 3 mln km) od Ziemi. Od czasu jej odkrycia to najbliższe podejście do naszej planety.
Rejestrowałem ją gdy była widoczna z jasnością ok. 16 mag, poruszając się z prędkością 38,72 arcsec/min przez gwiazdozbiór Smoka.
Ze względu na to, że asteroida poruszała się na niebie bardzo szybko, a pole widzenia mojego zestawu obserwacyjnego jest dość wąskie, wykonałem 4 sesje rejestracyjne po 25 minut każda. Ogólnie cała obserwacja trwała od godziny 20:50 do 22:35 UT. W tym czasie asteroida przemieściła się o 67,6 arcmin, czyli ponad dwie tarcze Księżyca.
Dzień wcześniej 19 sierpnia asteroida 1997 QK1 została zbadana przez radar Goldstone'a. Obserwacje radarowe wykazały, że asteroida jest wirującym obiektem (okres rotacji ok. 5 godzin) o kształcie orzeszka ziemnego, prawdopodobnie kontaktowym układem podwójnym lub nieaktywnym jądrem komety z rodziny Jowisza.
On August 20, I observed the Apollo-type asteroid 1997 QK1, which ranges from 240 to 530 meters in diameter. It was first observed by the Mauna Kea Observatory on August 27, 1997. Four days ago, during my observation, it passed within close proximity (about 3 million km) of Earth. This is its closest approach to our planet since its discovery.
I observed it when it was visible at about magnitude 16, moving at a speed of 38.72 arcsec/min through the constellation of Draco.
Because the asteroid was moving very quickly across the sky and my observing setup's field of view is quite narrow, I performed four observation sessions, each lasting 25 minutes. The entire observation lasted from 8:50 PM to 10:35 PM UT. During this time, the asteroid moved 67.6 arcmin, or more than two full lunar disks.
The day before, on August 19, asteroid 1997 QK1 was examined by the Goldstone radar. The radar observations revealed the asteroid to be a rotating (rotation period about 5 hours), peanut-shaped object, possibly a contact binary or an inactive Jupiter-family comet nucleus.
